BB National Quiz 2008

Round 1 - December 2007

On Saturday 1st December, James Walker, Chris Burrows, Jonathan Allpress and myself made the journey to Southport for the first round of the 2007/2008 Boys’ Brigade National Quiz.

Arriving at Liverpool Road Methodist Church, home to host company 7th Southport, the quiz began slightly late following delayed arrivals by other companies. As with last year, much of our competition was older than us, and included companies from Liverpool, Rochdale and Denton.

The quiz consisted of nine rounds. This year’s set topics included “The Titanic: from its birth to its sea trials” and “The British Empire and Commonwealth Games”. There were rounds to identify famous faces and sports grounds and individual rounds with questions presented to each member of the team from the number or letter they selected.

Throughout the evening, we remained high on the scoreboard, attaining top position on more than one occasion. In the end, it was the final round that would decide our final result and after plenty of suspense we finished at second place, high enough to secure our place in the next round. It should be noted that only half a mark separated us from the victors.

Thanks from the entire team go to Rob Welch and Rob Walker for organising and assisting with our participation in the quiz.

We’re now preparing for the second round, to be held Saturday 19th January in Northampton.

Round 2 - January 2008

The quiz team comprising James Walker, Chris Burrows, Jonathan Allpress and myself took the trip all the way to Northumberland for the second round of the National Quiz on Saturday, 19th January.

The host team, 11th Northampton were housed in a newly-built headquarters building where we soon took our places for the quiz to commence. This time the competition was at a whole new level, with the opposing teams the best from first round events. We met 14th West Bromwich, who we faced in last year’s competition, in addition to teams from Nottingham, Wolverhampton, Sutton in Ashfield and Northampton.

The rounds were similar, with rounds such as “The Titanic” and “The Commonwealth Games” back from the first round but with much more challenging questions. The individual rounds also had more challenging questions, although Jonathan made it clear that he felt one of the questions should have been answered...

Throughout the quiz, we held onto top positions, reaching joint-first place at the end of some rounds. In the end, we achieved a highly-commendable third place. This position will allow us to progress to Round 3 which will be held in Nottingham and I personally feel our performance has improved greatly from last year.

I, on behalf of the whole team, would like to thank Rob Welch and Rob Walker for making the incredibly long journey with us, and I hope we have a successful third round.
