In celebration internationally of 105 years of Rotary International, The Haslington Rotary Club ran an event in the style of a bazaar at the Yoxhall to allow local organisations promote themselves and help them to fundraise for their causes. The Cheshire East Borough Council Mayor, Maragret Simon was special guest to the event, seeing the brillant work of the many organisations that were present.
Company Section members, Joe Dixon and myself, Ryan Mellor, attended the event to promote the 1st Haslington Boys' Brigade in hope to gain more interest in our brigade and to possibly recruit new boys or even officers.
The event included organisations such as Haslington Youth Drama Group, the Haslington Conservationists group, St. Matthew's Church, the NSPCC, the Haslington Scouts and our local British Red Cross group. It was also a chance for the Rotary to promote itself as well with it's own stall.
Our stall comprised of two laptops, one showing the website and the other showing a presentation made by myself showing some of the many things we do as a Company. We also had a variety of leaflets, posters and newsletters to take away and a very nice looking banner made by Joe showing who we are.
At first we didn't have many visit our stall and not many members of the public turned out to attend the event but amongst those who did were two local Community Support Police Officers who promised to promote us in the local area and Mrs Simon, who seemed very pleased with what we were doing.
Going around the different stalls myself, it was very interesting to learn of the different local organisations in the area. Some I had heard of and others I hadn't and each one did offer me information I'd never known before and was incredibly interesting to see what they all had to say. It also surprised me how many knew our captain, Rob Welch. There truly are some amazing organisations in the local area and I feel that they are a real credit to our community.
While we didn't recieve many visitors, I feel that amongst the organisations present, I was able to promote our group and show some of the amazing activities we do and what we as boys have gained from it. Just setting up the day and talking to other people did make me realise how much the Boys' Brigade does for the local community and for the boys themselves making them into boys the community are proud of and to feel part of that was amazing.
I'd like to extend thanks to everyone who visited our stall and chatted to us and to parents Claire Dixon and Carol Mellor who helped supervise our stall and to Joe Dixon for putting in a lot of effort into helping set up the event. Finally I'd also like to thank the Rotary Club for allowing us to promote ourselves. We look forward to another promotion event.
